Udaipur (in Rajasthan) is one of the most romantic cities I have been to. No doubt, it is a popular wedding destination in India. In fact, I visited it for a wedding. As Indian weddings are known to be a long and hectic affair, I could only manage two days to make the most of this beautiful city.
I would say I did a pretty good job in the limited time period by visiting at least the prime locations which I also suggest as a ‘must-go’! Hope this list will help you if you’re on a tight schedule as well!
Jagdish Mandir

Jagdish Mandir is a beautiful temple complex dedicated to the Hindu Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is considered to be the preserver of the universe as per Hindu mythology.

The pillars of the temple have beautiful carvings depicting stories from the Hindu mythology, Ramayana. Lord Rama is said to be one of the reincarnations of Lord Vishnu on Earth. The temple was built by the then king, Maharana Jagat Singh, hence the name ‘Jagdish Mandir’.
It is a beautiful place to admire the marvellous architecture medieval India has to offer.
Bagore ki Haveli

Just a short walk down the street of Jagdish Mandir, is Bagore ki Haveli. Once occupied by the then Prime Minister of medieval Udaipur, the mansion is now converted into a museum to display the culture and lifestyle of the time. However, I reached the place when it was closing so I decided to enjoy their famous Dharohar Folk Dance Show.

I must say it was the best hour I had spent in the city! A wonderful display of Rajasthani folk dance and music by the highly talented local artists will leave you in awe of the splendid Rajasthani culture.
The tickets are available online as well as at the gate of Bagore ki Haveli. I suggest arriving early as the seats are available on a first-come-first served basis. The sitting is on the ground with clean mattresses provided by the team.
Gangaur Ghat

Udaipur, also known as the City of Lakes, has many artificial lakes built in it. One of the famous ones is Lake Pichola. Gangaur Ghat is one of the banks of Lake Pichola, situated next to Bagore ki Haveli. It served as a great place to lose myself in self-reflection while waiting for the dance show to begin.
City Palace
Being in Rajasthan and not delving into its valorous past would be unfair. Rajasthan has been the land of brave warriors and Udaipur was the home of the Mewari Rajputs. In fact, the city is named after its founder ruler, Maharana Udai Singh II.

The magnificent City Palace of Udaipur entails the spectacular stories of these valiant Rajputs. It is still the home of the royal family who live in the restricted areas of the palace.
Even if you are not a history buff, the Palace is a fascinating site to just enjoy the grand architecture and lifestyle of the royalties of India.

Though chargeable audio guides are available, you might also find English speaking local guides inside the Palace. I personally prefer a local guide as one can negotiate the price with them and ask them questions. But be careful to negotiate the price first if opting for a local guide; good haggling skills will be helpful.
The Palace will easily take at least two hours of your time to fully relish its beauty; save it for the afternoon to escape the sun!
Moti Magri
Maharana Pratap Singh is one of the most revered kings of the Mewari Rajputs. He is the successor of Maharana Udai Singh II. He gave his whole life fighting against Mughal invasion in Rajasthan. Even today, Maharana Pratap’s and his loyal horse Chetak’s name is taken with utmost respect.

Moti Magri, meaning Pearl Hill, celebrates this legend. It is a 20 minute walk atop a hill to a bronze statue of Maharana Pratap along with a scenic view of Fateh Sagar Lake and the Royal Observatory. Walking further towards the Japanese Rock Garden will take you to the ruins of Maharana Udai Singh II’s initial house in Udaipur.

The Hall of Heroes Museum is down the hill which portrays the life of Maharana Pratap and his family in large-sized portraits and models of their forts.
Vintage and Classic Car Museum
If classic cars interest you, then you must definitely visit the Vintage and Classic Car Museum! As the name suggests, it is a collection of vintage cars owned by the royal family of Udaipur. Among other collections include the 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom used in the James Bond movie, Octopussy.
The entry fee was a bit expensive for me so I skipped it to enjoy the delicious vegetarian Rajasthani thali (meal) provided at the Garden Hotel inside. I totally recommend it!

Sunset Point

The Sunset Point near the Dudh Talai Lake came as a soothing welcome to my friends and I after a day’s hectic sightseeing schedule. It gives a picturesque view of the city with a lovely sunset to cherish.
You can reach it by taking a cable car from Deendayal Park. Refreshments are provided at the point in case you wish to enjoy the beautiful view over a cup of chai!

Eklingji Mandir
Eklingji Mandir is the most serene (right from the pages of ancient Indian history books) temple I have visited! It is devoted to Lord Shiva, the creator of the Universe (according to Hindu mythology). It is one of the oldest temples of the Mewari times and is said to be their ruling deity.
It is an hour drive from Udaipur city and has limited timings. Since photography is not allowed within the premises, I do not have any pictures but I saved the beautiful complex in my memory palace and will always be in awe of it. I suggest to observe proper dressing so as to not disrespect the sanctity of the place.

I did my best to explore the main spots of the city within my limited time. But if you are still planning your travel, then do add the following places to your list:
Chittorgarh & Kumbhalgarh Forts
The two most important forts of Mewar Kingdom which should not be missed by those who wish to learn a bit more about the era. Kumbhalgarh is the birthplace of Maharana Pratap Singh. The fort's outer walls are claimed to be the second largest wall after the Wall of China.
Chittorgarh Fort is one of the largest forts in India. It is a witness to many brave battles fought to protect the fort.
Each fort would take a day to explore.
Sajjangarh
Sajjangarh or the Monsoon Palace is another famous tourist attraction in the city. It is named after the ruler who build it, Maharana Sajjan Singh. It was originally built as an astronomical centre but was later converted to a hunting lodge and a monsoon palace.
It gives a panoramic view of the city and serves as another sunset point in Udaipur.
Saheliyon-ki-Bari
Saheliyon-ki-Bari or the Garden of the Maidens was made for the royal ladies and their maidens to relax and unwind. It has many fountains and a lotus pool. I have heard it a pretty place for good pictures!
